28TH FEBRUARY

Near devizes there is a stunning vista called 'Roundway Down'. The walk features awe inspiring scenery and provoked me to take a variety of landscape photos( which as a lover of portraiture rarely happens)

In these picturesque country views I took photos of mostly my Dad (Anthony) but also some of him and his partner together.

I don't usually edit out peoples imperfections however my Dad is particularly insecure about his forehead so I just removed his blemishes and enhanced the lighting, saturation and shadows in the photo. (In the above photo)

The five photos I narrowed it down too I was extremely happy with. Of course the high altitude setting did most of the work for me as its hard to take bad photos in such a outstanding place.

The large aperture I generally have set produced a clear shot of what was in focus surrounded by a blurred background of the places topography.

Additionally my camera should take a lot of the praise- the high mega pixels make the subject incredibly detailed and picks up on even individual hairs etc.

I shot these with my 'nifty- fifty' lens (aka a 50mm 1.8 lens). This was before my 35mm 1.4 came which would have probably slightly improved the landscape side of the photos. The reasoning behind this is the 35mm lens has a wider angle and has a increased depth of field making it easier to get more consistent, sharper shots.

If I ever wanted to dedicate more time to landscapes(including if I was going on holiday to a place with serious aesthetic views). I would invest in a 14mm sigma art lens which would be great for nightime and mainly capture a vast landscape within a single shot.

In the past I usually haven't included family members in my work( mainly because they're unwilling!) yet I wanted to include my Dad in this because after spending three lockdowns with him and his Girlfriend I really consider us a family unit- something I wouldn't have said last year. Especially as he spent every free weekend fixing up his new house in Melksham I often helped him and I think we bonded over the amount of time we spent together. Not that we weren't close before but after my parents went through their divorce I still was very resentful towards him and dug up the past a fair bit. So I want to thank lockdown, including us threes walks, TV binges and game nights for bringing us closer- something I don't think would have occurred if I was in last years mindset.
